History of Diamond Mining from the Earth

Posted by Flora Jones on

Diamonds have been mined for thousands of years, with the earliest known diamond mining taking place in India around 4th century BC. However, commercial diamond mining as we know it today started in the late 19th century. Here's a brief history of diamond mining:

  • India: Diamonds were first mined in India along the Krishna river delta in the 4th century BC. These diamonds were primarily used for decorative purposes and were not widely traded.
  • Brazil: In the 18th century, diamonds were discovered in Brazil and this led to a surge in diamond mining activities. Brazil became the world's largest diamond producer until the late 19th century.
  • South Africa: In 1866, diamonds were discovered in South Africa, which changed the diamond industry forever. The discovery of diamonds in South Africa led to a diamond rush and an influx of miners from around the world. The industry quickly grew, and by the early 20th century, South Africa was the largest diamond producer in the world.
  • Russia: In the 1950s, diamonds were discovered in Russia, particularly in the Siberian region. This led to the establishment of the Soviet Union's diamond industry, which became the world's largest producer of diamonds by the 1970s.
  • Other countries: Today, diamond mining takes place in various countries around the world, including Australia, Botswana, Canada, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.

Diamond mining has evolved over the years, with technological advancements making it possible to mine diamonds from deeper and harder-to-reach deposits. Today, the diamond industry is heavily regulated to prevent the trade of conflict diamonds. Superlight Diamonds Only deal in Naturally Mined, Conflict Free Diamonds
