About Cut

When many people begin shopping for loose diamonds , they find themselves confused with all of the phrasing and terminology. There are a number of different terms that you will need to familiarize yourself with if you want to choose the perfect loose diamond for the jewelry that you would like to purchase. There are four different parts to choosing a diamond and they are often referred to as the four Cs: cut, clarity, color, carat. If you plan on shopping for loose diamonds, then it is important that you understand the Diamond Cut. Here is everything that you need to know about diamond cut so that you can make the right decision.

Many people actually confuse diamond cut with diamond shape, but these are actually two totally different things. The shape of the diamond is what you will see when you look down at it, like Round , Oval , Princess , or Radiant . The cut of the diamond is what you do not see. It has to do with what is going on below the surface of the stone and it will have a big impact on how beautiful, how brilliant and how sparkly the diamond actually is.

Basically, there are three main cuts that you may see when you are shopping for loose diamonds: shallow (Poor), Ideal (Good, Very Good, Excellent), and deep (Fair). If you were to look at a diamond from the side, you would see that an ideal stone will have that traditional look that you expect from a diamond shape. A shallow stone will be more short and wide while a deep stone will be long and tall. How does this cut affect the beauty of your loose diamond? When a stone is cut perfectly in the ideal cut, or good cut, it will have the most proportional facets and the perfect amount of light to be allowed in and reflected. If a stone is too shallow (Poor Cut), then the light does not come in from the sides and it will not sparkle well. If it is too deep, then too much light comes in from the sides or underneath and the stone can lose its sparkle as well.

In most cases, when you are learning about diamond cut, you should choose loose diamonds with an Ideal, Good, Very Good or Excellent Cut. However, some shapes do call for a different cut. For example, the Emerald Shape Diamond will have a more shallow cut. While this will affect the sparkle, it is necessary for the shape. When you begin shopping for loose diamonds, keep in mind that the cut is one of the most important things to look for in the stone. Also, it is accepted that only Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds will receive a Cut Grade on a diamond's certificate .
